How significant is celestial navigation in the age of GPS? Important enough that the US Naval Academy has reintroduced it into its curriculum, with a view to the possibility that GPS signals can be interrupted in times of conflict. Regardless, celestial navigation is an awesome skill to have as a Mariner, especially if you’re going to be crossing oceans.

The course can only be taken by those holding the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate.
The course is taught over 40 hours with three exam papers. It can be covered over 3 weekends or as an intensive week-long course. Individual tuition is available and discounts of up to 15% apply for groups of 3 or more.

Prior to the course your navigation skills should be at the standard of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course.
If you are working towards your Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, completion of this shorebased course exempts you from the written exam.
You will receive a course pack which includes a chart, course handbook, exercises and an electronic chart plotter CD. Please bring a notebook, 2B pencil for chartwork, Dividers and a Plotter. Coffee and tea on the house!
