Yachtmaster Ocean

“Unravel the mysteries of astro-navigation, using a sextant, ocean passage making, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids.” from the RYA website on the Yachtmaster Ocean course.

How significant is celestial navigation in the age of GPS?  Important enough that the US Naval Academy has reintroduced it into its curriculum, with a view to the possibility that GPS signals can be interrupted in times of conflict.  Regardless, celestial navigation is an awesome skill to have as a Mariner, especially if you’re going to be crossing oceans.

For the career minded, it is an important component for those seeking MCA deck officer qualifications.

The course can only be taken by those holding the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate.

The course is taught over 40 hours with three exam papers. It can be covered over 3 weekends or as an intensive week-long course.  Individual tuition is available and discounts of up to 15% apply for groups of 3 or more.

Course topics include:

  • The earth and the celestial sphere
  • Practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea
  • Meridian altitudes
  • Sun, star and other sights
  • Ocean passage planning

Prior to the course your navigation skills should be at the standard of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course.

If you are working towards your Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, completion of this shorebased course exempts you from the written exam.

You will receive a course pack which includes a chart, course handbook, exercises and an electronic chart plotter CD.  Please bring a notebook, 2B pencil for chartwork, Dividers and a Plotter.  Coffee and tea on the house!

Price:  $795 (Includes RYA course pack)
