Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Theory: “Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course. This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages.
This course will take your theory knowledge to the standard required for the Yachtmaster™ Coastal and Yachtmaster™ Offshore practical exams, concentrating on advanced navigation and meteorology skills.” From the RYA website
The RYA pioneered the Yachtmaster program. It has since become the most recognised advanced certification for small boaters (under 200gt) in the world. It is one of the few (if not the only) qualifications that bridges the gap between recreational training and commercial accreditation, which makes it highly sought after by people seeking a career in the yachting industry.
Prior to taking this course your own navigational standard should be the equivalent of Day Skipper theory. WARNING! The tidal work at the Yachtmaster level is significantly higher than the Day Skipper level.
The course is taught over 40 hours with three exam papers. It can be covered over 3 weekends or as an intensive week-long course. Individual tuition is available and discounts of up to 15% apply for groups of 3 or more.
Course topics include:
- position fixing
- course shaping and plotting
- tidal knowledge
- use of almanacs and admiralty publications
- electronic position finding equipment
- taking and interpreting forecasts
- plotting weather systems
- weather predictions using a barometer and by observation
- collision regulations

It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.
